What are you waiting for?

Very quiet and cloudy as usual, I sat around all day.

Boy, O, Boy, what a dream. Listen have I been seeing things, you are asking me. This morning, got up about 7:30 took Hap to work but he didn’t work. Laid around and argued with Mutt until after 10:00. Than the fire works started, Mutt and me went after a xmas tree, we went out about 4 or 5 miles on highway and then took to high timber. Up one hill and down another, Mud and more mud right through the center of a pine forest, not large enough for sawing but very, very pretty. Well we found the xmas tree and then got lost, I mean we didn’t know straight up. Some people smarter than us told us how to get home. We didn’t mind though because the country was very pretty. That isn’t half of it , if you can imagine, Dallas, Ft. Worth and  Sanantonia and part of Houston all together you have an idea of the little village I was in this eve. it is 30 miles from here it isn’t so hillie there as it is here. The streets are narrow, the buildings would disappoint you, because they are not any higher than the ones in Dallas, but the crowds and traffic will run any Westerner crazy. Everyone tries to get a head, every thing looks dirty and black from coal smoke and dust, noise you couldn’t hear a cannon for it and as far as you can see there is more of it. They say it has the largest trading market in the world. I know it is plenty big, you have seen picture shows where they build a house and every one lives in it, when you step out of the front door you are on the street, I didn’t say the porch or yard because they don’t know what that is. There is a lot more but I didn’t get to see very much. I took the family over to do some shopping I intend to see it though if I stay here. That is Baltimore, it is over 200 years old 7th in size in the U.S. until tomorrow, “Good Night.”

Hap and Mutt at work the sun is shining yes really. All day I did nothing went to see the Doc. Again he left the splint on, that is what I call H- - -. I can’t do any thing until after the first. OH! Well it is all in life. Am having a big time the people here are very friendly. At times I think I would really like it up here, until I think about every one out in God’s country. Until tomorrow Sweet dreams.

Hap went to work this morning, I could only the Doc. forbid me using my D- - -, Thumb. I am plenty mad, you would be too.

This is a goofy bunch of people up here. You can’t buy pepper sauce any where, They don’t know how to make hamburgers and really they don’t know what Hot Tamales are. That is a fact. They call black eye peas, beans and a water faucet is a “spicket”. I don’t know what that is your guess is as good as mine.

Up early it is raining that is luck for me all ways the wrong kind, went to town the only prospect I had closed on account of rain. Now 10:30 rain is getting worse. Hap gone to town to sell some tires and my boots. I hope he does I am broke and out of smokes, I don’t like the predicament at all. Sold my boots got as much as I gave for them. I went to see the Doc. He put a splint on my thumb I don’t like it worth a by gee.

Went to town about 10 A.M. to find a job. They are building a new dormitory out at the College the boss said I was an hour late. better luck next time, back home. Noon back to town again, went to three factories; all are going to put on some more men after the first. Oh! Yes the sun was out for a while today, but is resting now. A very lazy sun up here only shines occasionally. Lay down and tried to read some but didn’t have much luck. Mutt came in he and I went to find a tire rack for the car but didn’t do any good. Now supper, then mutt packed a coat he had to send back to the factory. We went to town and mailed it then walked around a while. Back home 8:00 P.M. am going to bed, may try to read some, don’t guess I will Gedy has class tonight, Mutt and Hap stayed up to annoy me.

Up early had breakfast, Mutt gone to work. Went to town about 9:00 to mail some letters and did some shopping bought a pair of trousers, don’t like them very well also a shirt and Jacket like them pretty fair. Dinner time again, after dinner am writing this, have to take Gedy to town after while. I haven’t seen the sun since Friday last, I wonder what has become of it, They say it shines here, I wonder when. Took Gedy to town about 5:00 you know women it took for ever to make a purchase. Over an hour and I could have bought the Woolworth building in that time, brought one of Gedy’s girl friends home with us. Her name is Mary, something I don’t know what. After supper went back to the Doc’s to have me hand dressed. Than to the Armory to meet Mutt, “The Mutt here is James I Moss instead of Luna and will continue throughout the rest of this diary.” The Armory is a meeting place for the National Guardsmen, Mutt is a member. Watched the boys disassemble and reassemble a Browning machine gun, they do that quite often, I met some of the boys but wouldn’t know them now. Came home Hap took the girl friend home, Gee he is starting out early don’t you think. Kinda rushing the season I would say.

Got up about 8:00, and ate breakfast took Gedy to Sunday school, wrote to Bill and the rest of the folks. Now dinner after that we drove some, looking at the fair city. More hills, back home ate supper, wrote some more letters. Then some girls came over some of Gedy’s friends, good girls but the world is full of them, to bed at last kinda sleepy.

we drove day and night.

The Remainder of this is being written in Westminster, Md. If I left any thing out I am sorry because we drove day and night.

Left Kemp after dark every thing is under control. Stopped in Greenville for gas and a flat. back on the road about an hour lost, nothing interesting. Texarkana 4:00 AM,

Thu Morning in Little Rock at 10:15 A.M. lots of pretty pines, the road is cut through a pine forest, and is very beautiful from Little Rock not much to look at in to Missouri. Good roads through Ark, except about 125 mi. Roads in Missouri fine, C every swell, Hills all the way. In to St. Louis at 12:05 A.M.

Friday morning I drove in to St. Louis, Hap drove out, pretty nice town fact is it is a city. Crossed the Mississippi River it runs through St. Louis a dividing line for Missouri and Illinois in to the snow but not heavy just covered the ground in places. Temperature 24 degrees from now on I don’t remember too well, the stats are very small and mountainous, fact is we were going up or down continuously on in to Westminster. there isn’t room enough this side of the Mississippi to park a car with out one end or the other being down hill. Arrived in Westminster 11:30 Saturday morning the 15th of December Eastern Standard time. Don’t like the looks of this country worth a by gee, still up hill or down, Slept a while Saturday eve. went to town Saturday night believe me this is the biggest little town in the east. Woolworth here is about the same size as the one at home and there wasn’t standing room, if you didn’t move on with the crowd they moved you. I went to the Doc with my hand and have to go again Monday. I wanted to take some pictures on the way but didn’t get to, am sorry.

Wed. 12th December, 1934

Went to bed last night at 9:30, up again 7:30 had a good nights sleep ate breakfast about 8:00, to work on the car. Mr. Brown helped took the tire rack off built a trunk rack, not very hot to look at but very substantial. Then changed some tires packed, started, stopped in Powell cashed Money order, then got gas and aired up tires, On the road stopped to take picture of Trinity River Bridge. Madam took it I don’t know what it will look like, I hope it is good. Stopped to eat dinner with George and Ellen, the dinner was very nice, enjoyed very much, met some of their friends. Ellen and Mutt gone after her little girl. Will write more later. I forgot some of the boys, I think, Mr. Browns youngest daughter is just like Georgia Headrick to look at but that is all.” Ellen and the girls home, we are on the way again. Every thing is lovely now, it’s after sundown we are in Kemp Texas my old childhood stomping ground. Some more of the madams folks two more of her brothers.
