NASHVILLE -- The Titans new general manager says the team is in good hands with the quarterbacks they have. Limited Von Miller Jersey . Ruston Webster understands why some Volunteer fans want Peyton Manning to continue his NFL career in the state where he played in college. With Mannings future in doubt due to neck surgery and a $28 million bonus due from the Colts in March, some fans put together a website and solicited money for billboards in Indianapolis imploring the quarterback to return. But the Titans tried to downplay the Manning talk Tuesday in a conference call with season-ticket holders as Webster addressed the topic before taking questions. Webster called Manning a great player in the NFL and noted he was under contract with another team. "We also feel like were in good hands," Webster said. The Titans signed Matt Hasselbeck to a three-year deal worth more than $20 million last July, and he led them to a 9-7 record. Webster said Hasselbeck brought the Titans through a tough time after losing top receiver Kenny Britt. Hasselbeck threw for 3,571 yards, the most by a Tennessee quarterback since 2002. Jake Locker played well enough in relief to make the Titans happy they used the eighth pick overall in 2011 on the quarterback. Locker threw for four touchdowns with no interceptions and a 99.4 passer rating coming off the bench in relief of Hasselbeck during the season. Coach Mike Munchak already has said Hasselbeck and Locker will compete to be the starter in 2012. "He showed enough during the season to warrant a chance to win the job, and hell have a good shot to do that," Webster said of Locker. "Very talented player, he brings a lot of excitement to the game, and so we are as excited as you are about seeing him out there. Itll be a good competition. It wont just be Matts job or anything like that, and Matt knows that. The best man will win." Webster said the Titans are in good shape with about $35 million in salary cap space, but he intends to address the offensive line among other positions as they fix a running game ranked 31st in the NFL in 2011. The defensive line and linebacking corps also are due for upgrades after Tennessee had only 28 sacks in 2011. The Titans will pick No. 20 overall in the first round of the draft in April, and defence could be the big focus. "What we want is to be like the old Titans defence," Webster said. "We want to play fast and tough and physical and have teams fear us when they come in and play us. Thats what were going to work toward improving our pass rush, which hopefully will help those defensive backs out on the backside too." The Titans will be trying to use some of that cap space on keeping some of their own players off the free agent market. Tennessee has 17 pending free agents led by cornerback Cortland Finnegan and defensive linemen Jason Jones, William Hayes and Dave Ball. Webster refused to give hints on which players he wants to sign before March 13 to avoid painting himself into a corner. A couple fans lobbied for him to keep Finnegan. The cornerback bolted training camp in August upset when the Titans made a counter-offer to his agent for a new deal, and there were no talks during the season. "I spoke to his agent briefly at the Senior Bowl," Webster said. "Just talked to him for a minute. Were still kind of going through all that, making decisions on what we want to do with all our players free agent-wise, including him." Webster did give fans a bit of good news about Britt. The receiver tore his right ACL in September after the best start of his career. "Kennys been working hard, and hes coming fast, probably even a little faster than I thought he would so Im real happy about that," the general manager said. "We expect to have him out there for training camp. The good thing about this injury, if there was a good thing, is it happened early. And hes a very strong young man and bounces back pretty quickly from these things." ------ Follow Teresa M. Walker on Twitter at www.twitter.com/teresamwalker Gary Zimmerman Broncos Jersey . It was the 26-year-old Monfils first match since he lost to American player Brian Baker at the Open de Nice in May. The former Metz champion hit 21 aces as he won in a little more than an hour to set up a match against either countryman Nicolas Mahut or Daniel Brands of Germany. Authentic Peyton Manning Jersey . The 57th-ranked Wozniak trailed 4-1 in Sundays opening set against El Tabakh. But the Toronto resident, ranked 183rd in the world, missed on three nervous set points and was broken in her last two service games as Wozniak turned the momentum. Tom Jackson Jersey . Manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez will have a microdiscectomy performed by Dr. Robert Watkins on Wednesday to remove part of a disc, the latest and perhaps most serious setback in the second basemans injury-marred tenure with the Giants.INDIANAPOLIS -- Josef Newgarden stood outside the Indianapolis 500 rookie luncheon trading advice with Jean Alesi. Though it seemed strange seeing the youngest driver in this years Indianapolis 500 explaining to the oldest rookie in 500 history how to get around the Brickyards 2.5-mile oval, Newgarden seemed at ease Tuesday. "The faster you go, the easier this place is," the 21-year-old kid explained to the 47-year-old Alesi. Newgarden has a way of making things sound and look easy. From the moment Sarah Fishers No. 67 car rolled off the truck in Indy this month, Newgarden was one of the fastest drivers. He topped the speed charts three times in the first five practices -- more than anyone else all week. While some contend Newgardens speeds were artificially inflated by tows, he proved his numbers were real by becoming the only Honda driver to make Saturdays pole shootout. Not even the four Honda cars from Chip Ganassis powerhouse team could do that. Starting seventh Sunday, the inside of Row 3, makes Newgarden the highest rookie qualifier since Danica Patrick started fourth in 2005. And if he wins the race, Newgarden would become the first to win Indys other May race, the Freedom 100, and the world-famous 500 in back-to-back years. No American rookie has won the race since Louis Meyer in 1928. "How cool would that be?" shouted Newgarden, the first Tennessean to start the race. "My parents would be so proud. It would be a great accomplishment." It would make him a star in Gasoline Alley, too, wheres hes already developing a sort of cult following. IndyCar fans who desperately want a young American star to revive the series have added Newgarden to the growing list of other 20-something hopefuls -- Marco Andretti, JR Hildebrand, Charlie Kimball and Graham Rahal. Right now, though, Newgarden is the hottest thing going. Hes qualified in the top 10 three straight times and just missed finishing in the top 10 at St. Petersburg, finishing 11th in his IndyCar debut. At Long Beach, Newgardens bold move to pass three-time defending IndyCar champ Dario Franchitti led to a crash, and when Franchitti criticized him afterward, Newgarden refused to acquiesce. Its not just race fans who are taking notice of the baby-faced, blonde-haired racer who abstains from alcohol. His public relations representative jokes that female fans range from tweens to cougars. None of the attention fazes Newgarden. "Theyre blinded by the speed, thatts all it is," Newgarden said with a smile. Orlando Franklin Jersey. "Its all smoke and mirrors." Not really. Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing jumped at the chance to sign Newgarden after Ed Carpenter left to form his own team after last season. Part of the reason was money. As the first Mazda Road to Indy graduate, Newgarden was given a $1 million scholarship by the series to shop his services. Fisher saw a talented, young driver, too. Newgarden began pursuing racing seriously at age 13, and won multiple World Karting championships from 2005-2007. In 2008, he became the first American to win the International Formula Ford Festival in the Kent Class. The next year, he moved to the British Formula Ford Series, where he wound up second. And in 2011, Newgarden emerged as the next big thing in IndyCar by winning five of the 14 Indy Lights races and finishing in the top three 10 times. He ran away with the points title and established himself as a force to be reckoned with. "Josefs got a lot of experience on ovals and Sarah Fisher did a really good job on that car and Josef really nailed it in qualifying," said Simon Pagenaud, a former Champ Car driver who is fifth in the points as he heads into his first 500. "Its a combination of a lot of things." This years rookie class is one of the 500s most unusual. There is Newgarden and Wade Cunningham, the Freedom 100s only three-time winner. There is Pagenaud and Katherine Legge, Champ Car veterans but 500 newcomers. Theres Bryan Clauson, Newgardens teammate and a USAC star, and James Jakes, who was in Indy last year but failed to qualify for the race. Plus, theres 2002 U.S. Grand Prix winner Rubens Barrichello and Alesi, who have combined for 523 career Formula One starts. All of them except Newgarden and Barrichello (10th) are starting in the second half of the field. Alesis advice to the young American is simple. "When youre young and in a good position, you want to enjoy it, but you have to realize the race is long and not to get too excited by the first lap and the crowd," Alesi said. "I remember when I was young and made a mistake at the beginning of the race and I had to watch the rest of the race on TV. You have to remember the race is long." Its a lesson Newgarden will heed come Sunday. "I think thats great advice," he said. "Ive heard that from other people, too, and thats what this race is all about, making it to the finish." ' ' '
