China won its fourth gold medal in diving on Wednesday after Wang Feng and Qin Kai took first in the men’s synchronized three-meter springboard, outperforming the second-place Russians by more than 50 points.
The Americans Chris Colwill and Jevon Tarantino nearly won the bronze medal, but Tarantino botched his entry in the final dive, a reverse three-and-a-half somersault, and they slipped to fourth. Ukraine won the bronze medal.
“This hurts really bad right now — to be so close, especially with the synchro thing, I think sometime someone feels like it’s their fault,” Tarantino said. “But it’s not. It’s a team.”
The United States has not won a medal in diving in Beijing, consistently placing fourth and fifth. In Athens in 2004, Americans did not win any diving medals for the first time in nearly 100 years.
China, on the other hand, is dominating the sport, having won all four of the medal events so far. Four events remain, in individual diving.
“The Olympic Games are in Beijing and of course you see how well they performed,” the Russian diver Dmitry Sautin said during a news conference after the medal ceremony. “There is no doubt that they are strong.”
