HUMBLED

today i was extremely touched by a man named david. perhaps you have read my blogs and know the story, if not mabe you should, for it is a great story of a man and his unwillingness to give up his dog in order to live in a homeless shelter. as you may know , about 12 days ago or so it was brought to my attention that a homeless man here in dallas was sitting at an off ramp to a highway, like so many of us see everyday while going to and coming from our jobs. well, this man was different, he had a dog sitting beside him and his sign, unlike many others i have seen, didnt say need help, need money, ect...  his sign simply said PLEASE NEED DOG FOOD, GOD BLESS. now i am not one to usually help people sitting on the side of the highway, for i am like most of society and they seem to just be a part of the "big city" life. the fact that the man was asking for food for his dog, and me being a dog person, compelled me to help this man. the person who took the picture that i saw is named Karla, she is an angel with a huge heart. something inside of me told me to help this man and his dog waldo. so the next morning i packed up a bog of things like toilet paper, towels, canned food, lighter, chap stick, a couple shirts, a blanket for the dog, ect... along the way i stopped at a pet store, PETCO and went in to see if they would be willing to donate some food for this dog. i explained who i was and what my org. was all about and the employees of this store took it upon themselves to buy a bag of dog food for this mans dog. what a great bunch of people they are. little did i know at the time that by helping this man(david) and his dog (waldo ) it would change me . i brought the stuff to the closest address that was l;isted on the picture and i did not see them, so i circled around a few times and was getting ready to leave when i spotted them sitiing by the side of the off ramp. i pulled into the nearest parking lot, grabbed the bag of goodies i had gotten together and headed towards them. david saw me coming and was blown away that someone had come with stuff for him and his dog. we spoke for a few minutes and i went about my day. since that day a FB page has been made for those who wished to follow the story of them. i later found out (the next day) that david was a war veteran.i then contacted the VGS (veterans support group) here in dallas via a post on their FB page, within minutes a reply said call me, with a number. i called the number and spoke to a man in the main office in florida, he gave me the contact information of a man here in dallas. the following monday i called and spoke to a Mr Harris and told him about their plight. he said he thought that he could help them but the dog might be an issue, i informed him that david would not take any help if he couldnt have his friend ! he said:let me see what i can do" i posted this info  on the site and another angel by the name of cindy jumped on board and called Mr Harris as well. as the days went by so many people stepped up to help these 2 souls with food and blankets and tarps and clothes , ect. so many people were bringin them stuff that i had to post on the page for people to stop bringing them things as it might put them at risk for theft. as all the visits from everyone had not gone unnoticed by the other homeless people in the area. within days the paperwork was brought to david via cindy and was then faxed back to Mr Harris for approval. within hours we heard back that he had been approved by the VSG !!! well, today we went and we gave david the good news, he was so overwhelmed about everything that we had done for him and so grateful for us doing what we had done. a few of the others had took up a collection and got david and waldo a motel room until monday when they are to be picked up by Mr Harris and taken into veterans housing. so we packed up his stuff from under the bridge , where he and waldo had been staying since his arrival in dallas only 10 short days ago. the amount of stuff he had received floored me, it also filled my truck from the back of the front seats to the very back of it. which really renewed my faith in people and their compassion for a man and his dog, but not just a man, a veteran of the Korean war. so david and waldo are now resting in a nice warm, safe motel room. enjoying the comforts that we take for granted on a daily basis, a shower, a soft clean bed to sleep on, a tv to watch anything.a microwave. and even a cell phone which a women named sherry stopped and brought to him with a 200 minute card for it. here was a man, a veteran who has been homeless for over 20 yrs and his dog, now sitting in a motel room , with 5 strangers, a truck load of donated stuff including, duffle bags, dog food, bottled water, knapsacks full of dog toys and treats , a dog bed,new pants, shirts socks underwear, everything that we take for granted everyday. you see after all this we have become friends, david , waldo and me. they have touched my heart more than anyone i have ever met in my life before now, it has made me feel like i have done something good for a change, because i didnt (as many do ) walk by or turn the other way. i chose to follow my gut and do what i felt i should do. and that was to help this "stranger" and his dog. i know that david and i will remain friends after he has gotten his life back on track and i look forward to seeing him and waldo again soon as they re enter society as changed beings. and just think, it all started with an angel who posted a picture on FB.  now the lives of a man and his dog will be changed for ever because a few wonderful people stepped up and cared enough to not look away.  anyone reading this that would like to see the story for themselves and/or follow it as if unfolds for these too are more than welcome to come join the page.  here is the link to the FB page,   thanks for reading my blog :)
