Power is a good thing when it doesn't come with consequences. Long hours, no one who talks to you long enough to see how powerful you are and, of course, the people who know you have authority and are drawn to you like a moth to a flame and will not leave you alone.
I have looked up from my desk and work and seen people hovering by the windowed store front, inhaling cigarettes and peering through the clouded glass just to see if I'm around. When they notice me they smile and beckon me out into the blinding sun amid the smell of diesel trucks and fermenting trash from the county dump across the street. Somehow I loathe these people, not entirely based upon the fact they never bring anything of interest to my life, but more or less because they become increasingly more distracting to my daily routine and I associate them with discomfort and rotting refuse. They are a blight upon my being and should be content to impose upon my life only briefly and within the confines of my work environment.
In my dealings with society I have found one thing to hold true with all the people I consider to be socially acceptable, somewhat intelligent and generally useful parts of the world machine: People who cross state lines in their search for a settling point seem to be more levelheaded and well versed.
I'm not sure why, but every strange person I meet in life that I don't want to kill within the first minute will end up having lived in more than one state. Also I just seem to like people that are more or less free of regional dialect and accents. ;)
