SEATTLE -- Beating Felix Hernandez might be the satisfying win that propels the Angels to make a September run for a wild-card spot. Colin Kaepernick Nike Jersey . Mark Trumbo hit a two-run single in the eighth inning Saturday that helped hand Hernandez his first loss in nearly three months and Los Angeles won its fifth straight, 5-2 over the Seattle Mariners. "Thats a big statement on how we keep grinding it out," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We beat a terrific pitcher this afternoon. He had been pitching as well as anyone in baseball for a while." Hernandez (13-6) lost for the first time since June 12. He entered this outing 9-0 with a 1.40 ERA over his previous 14 starts, including a perfect game. Trout and Torii Hunter singled to open the eighth. Albert Pujols then hit a one-hopper to third baseman Kyle Seager, who couldnt corral it down for an error. That allowed Trout to score, tying the game at 2, while Hunter and Pujols each moved into scoring position. "I saw him going and its a contact play," Seager said. "Trout runs well but if I catch that ball and make a good throw, hed have been out pretty easily. Its just a play where I got in-between hops and wasnt able to make the play. I should have definitely made it." Kendrys Morales bounced out, and Trumbo then sent a hit through the left side as both runners scored easily. The three-run rally continued against reliever Stephen Pryor as Howie Kendrick delivered a RBI single. "They cracked the door open for us a little bit. I thought we had some good at-bats, some key hits, put some guys in motion. We were getting after it," Scioscia said. "Felix is tough. He does special things with the baseball. He changes speed. Hes got stuff. He competes. We did a terrific job against a great pitcher." Hernandez, who was beyond 110 pitches when things fell apart, said, "I felt good. I felt the same. I was throwing the ball pretty good until the eighth. I feel strong." King Felix gave up five runs -- four earned -- in 7 1-3 innings. He yielded nine hits, walked two and struck out seven. In three starts against the Angels, Hernandez is 0-2. He has allowed 15 runs and 24 hits for a 5.75 ERA. His ERA against the rest of baseball: 2.16. Ervin Santana (8-11) went seven innings. He gave up two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two. Ernesto Frieri worked the ninth to pick up his 17th save in 19 opportunities. "The fact is Ervin really, pitch for pitch, was right with Felix," Scioscia said. "There werent many mistakes that Ervin had in this game." The Angels scored first, on Pujols RBI double in the first inning. Trayvon Robinson tied it with his second home run, in the third. Franklin Gutierrez gave the Mariners a 2-1 lead with a run-scoring double in the third. "Hes one of the toughest pitchers in the league. We both do a good job," Santana said. "If both pitchers pitching good then were just waiting for one mistake." Trumbo found it. "My whole thing is be present when I need to be," said Trumbo, who was hitting just .202 in August and just came out of a 0-for-16 skid. "I found myself in a situation with a couple runners out there. I was able to clean up and able to drive them in. "I dont worry about yesterday. I dont worry about tomorrow," Trumbo said. "I need to be where I need to be and allow my ability to come out instead of trying force it." NOTES: The Angels added four players to the roster. Left-handers Nick Maronde and Andrew Taylor had their contracts purchased from the minors while C John Hester and INF Andrew Romine were recalled. "That depth is something that can help you," Scioscia said. ... Seattle also added a pair, OF Carlos Peguero and RHP Erasmo Ramirez. The club intends to bring up more players but will wait until after the minor league season ends Monday. OF Michael Saunders sat out after tweaking his right hamstring Friday. It came after he missed six games with the same injury. "I dont think its any setback whatsoever," Saunders said. He expected to be back in the lineup in a couple days. Manager Eric Wedge added, "Sometimes you just dont know till you get out there at game speed." This was the first of three straight home day games for the Mariners, the first time that has happened since Sept. 4-6, 1999, against Boston. Frank Gore Red Jersey . Almost to a man, NFL coaches have said they need to avoid confrontations with the replacements and keep focused on the task at hand. "Its our job to go out there and control what we can control," Bill Belichick said following his teams Sunday night loss to the Baltimore Ravens. "Thats what were going to try to work on...We just have to go out there and try to play the best we can." Ravens coach Jim Harbaugh echoed Belichicks comments when he spoke to Sports Illustrateds Peter King following his teams win. "These guys [the officials] deserve our respect," Harbaugh said. "This is a tough job, and theyre doing the best they can. As far as Im concerned, Im not commenting on any of the calls. For us, its got to be a non-story. You dont want to set yourself up to be thinking about the officials all the time." Those statements came after a penalty-filled contest that threatened to get out of hand at times. By many accounts, the officials struggled and made a number of curious calls and non-calls. Still, both Harbaugh and Belichick did nothing to diffuse the situation, as cameras caught them on numerous occasions having animated verbal confrontations that did nothing but add fuel to the fire. By the end of the night, both teams players had even gotten into the act, with Ray Lewis and Vince Wilfork in particular coming dangerously close to a physical confrontation – something Belichick actually did following the game - chasing down an official and tugging on his arm. Watching the game and all the controversy involved in it, you have to wonder - are the NFLs coaches dealing with the replacements in the proper way? Coaches like Harbaugh and Belichick realize theyre always walking a fine line when they talk to the men in stripes. They know that on the one hand, by keeping the pressure on the officials and making them aware of their presence, they are likely to influence a few decisions throughout the course of a game. However, as we have seen many times this season, coaches have the tendency – despite what they say publicly – to cross the line in their criticism to the point where the focus of both themselves and their teams turns to the officiating and not to executing in the proper way on the field. Joe Montana Jersey. So far this season, it seems the successful teams have been the ones who keep their focus on the task at hand and not at the men Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes called "Foot Locker" employees. This was not any more present then in Denver when Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was at the receiving end of back-to-back personal foul penalties, the second of which completely knocked off his helmet and left him lying prone on the field clutching his head. Although the Texans bench was animated at the time, they quickly regained their focus and took out their frustrations on the hometown Broncos, to the tune of a convincing 31-25 road win. When asked his opinion on the way NFL teams should handle the replacement officials, TSN CFL analyst Matt Dunigan said the players and coaches should keep the focus solely on their own jobs. "The coaches have to just move forward and so do the players and they have to play within the confines of the way the game is being called now," Dunigan said in an interview with The Mike Richards Show on TSN Radio 1050. "I know youre talking about safety, but you cant harp on it. Those things are out of your control. You go out there and you play football and you work through those things." Dunigan said it can be to a teams detriment to direct too much attention towards men who arent playing the game. "When I call a game, I try not to let the officiating take precedent or become part of the broadcast because I want it to be about football," he said. "Not about throwing your arms up in the air, not to be grabbing referees or officials after the football game. Control the things you can control, between the whistles, between the lines and coach your players up and move on and navigate around it." With both sides firmly entrenched on their positions - and with Roger Goodells history of taking firm stances in negotiations - its hard to envision the lockout ending anytime soon. So, in the meantime, the NFLs coaches and players will have to find a way to coexist with its replacement officials. The only question is how should they do that? Should players and coaches continue to have a confrontational relationship, looking to intimidate and influence the men in stripes, hoping to benefit? Or should they take on a more detached role, focus on their own jobs and take out their frustrations on each other? As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '
