She stood atop the cliffs so high ~
She seemed a part of the cold black sky ~
And before her above the watery plains ~
A latern lit as plain as day.
A woman's face appeared behind ~
And said, "Come, and you will find ~
The end to all that binds you down ~
For to death, you are bound."
Jump...
From her perch she leapt so high ~
It seemed she might have touched that chill black sky ~
Her silken sleeves, they fluttered so ~
And the wind through her hair did blow.
For a minute, it did seem ~
As if upon her, the moon beamed ~
And she felt as though she did right ~
Flying through the dead of night.
No one ever heard the splash ~
As, with the waves, her body crashed ~
And she never looked behind ~
For 'twas deemed a lover's suicide.
And standing above, floating there ~
In silken kimono and skin so fair ~
Was the woman whose lantern started ~
The fall of one so broken-hearted.
